Wear patterns tell you what is wrong
A tire records the conditions it has been driven under. Wear concentrated on both outer edges usually points to chronic underinflation; wear down the center points the other way. Wear on one edge only is typically an alignment angle. A scalloped or cupped pattern often indicates a suspension component that is no longer controlling the wheel properly. This is why a recommendation should follow an inspection of the tire rather than a glance at the tread depth, and why replacing tires without addressing the cause simply restarts the same pattern on new rubber.
Rotation and balancing answer different complaints
These two get booked together often enough to sound like one job. Rotation moves each tire to a different position so the set wears at a closer rate over its life; it is maintenance, and it corrects nothing that has already gone wrong. Balancing deals with how weight sits around an assembled wheel and tire, which is what produces a vibration that arrives in one speed range and fades outside it. Neither changes the angles the wheels sit at, so a vehicle that will not track straight needs something else.
Why position changes how a tire wears
Tires on the same vehicle do not do the same work. The driven wheels put the power down, the front wheels steer and carry most of the load under braking, so one axle normally wears faster. Rotation spreads that difference so the set stays closer together. Timing matters: a tire moved early keeps wearing evenly, while one left until a pattern is established carries that pattern with it. If your tires are already at noticeably different depths, mention it when you book.

What to know before the visit.
How often should tires be rotated?
Many manufacturers pair rotation with oil-change intervals, which is a reasonable rhythm for most drivers. The better answer for your vehicle comes from its handbook and from how the current tires are actually wearing.
Can I ask about a specific tire size?
Yes. Have the tire size or vehicle year, make, and model ready when you call or book. The size is printed on the sidewall of your current tires and on the placard inside the driver door.
Does new tread mean my tires are fine?
Not necessarily. Tires age as well as wear, and sidewall cracking, damage from an impact, or a repeatedly repaired tire can matter regardless of remaining tread depth. Depth is one measurement among several.
The car vibrates at highway speed. Is that the tires?
A vibration that appears in one speed range and settles outside it is usually a balance problem in a wheel and tire assembly. If you only feel it while slowing down, start with the braking system instead.
One edge of my tires is worn. Will new tires fix that?
New tires will look right for a while and then wear the same way, because wear down a single edge normally reports the angle the wheel meets the road at rather than a fault in the tire. Read the pattern first, and correct the angles if that is the cause.
