Check Engine Light On: What It Means
A check-engine light reports that a fault was recorded. It names the circuit that reported it, not the part that failed. A steady light means note the conditions and book the vehicle in. A flashing light is different: reduce speed, avoid heavy acceleration, and call before driving further. Either way, clearing the code is not a repair.

A code is a starting point, not the failed part
A stored code tells you which circuit or system reported a value outside its expected range. It does not name the failed part. A code described online as an oxygen sensor code can be set by an exhaust leak upstream of the sensor, by wiring, or by a fuel-delivery problem the sensor is reporting accurately. Replacing the part the code appears to name is the most common reason a light returns a week later.
Steady light or flashing light
These mean different things. A steady light means a fault has been recorded and the vehicle should be looked at, but it is usually not an emergency. A flashing light typically indicates a misfire severe enough to risk damage to the catalytic converter, and driving on can turn a contained repair into a much larger one. What to know before you book.
Is a parts-store code read the same as a diagnosis?
No. A code read tells you which code is stored. Diagnosis is the testing that determines why it is stored — checking the circuit, the component, and the conditions that set it. The second is what prevents replacing a part that was never the problem.
Can I still get inspected with the light on?
