Grinding Noise When Braking
Grinding when you brake is a different complaint from a squeal. A high-pitched squeal on light braking is often the wear indicator doing its job. Grinding usually means metal is contacting the rotor, and the longer it continues the more likely the rotor is being damaged rather than merely worn. Treat it as a measurement question rather than a noise.

Brakes are a system, so the noise is only the entry point
An inspection covers pad thickness and wear pattern, rotor condition and thickness, caliper operation and whether it is sliding freely, hoses and lines, and the condition and level of the brake fluid. Wear pattern matters as much as the measurement: pads worn unevenly across one axle usually point at a caliper or slide problem rather than simply being due for replacement.
Whether the rotors stay is a measurement, not a policy
A grinding noise raises the rotor question straight away, and the honest answer is that it depends on the numbers. Whether a rotor can stay depends on its measured thickness, its surface condition, and whether there is thickness variation causing vibration. Some are within specification and can remain; others are past the manufacturer minimum and cannot safely be reused.

What to know before you book.
Is grinding always the pads?
Not always, and it is not safe to assume. Grinding commonly means the friction material is gone and metal is meeting the rotor, but the same visit has to establish whether a caliper or slide is what wore that pad out early. Replacing the pads alone would return the vehicle with the same complaint.
Why can one brake pad wear out before the others?
Pads can wear at different rates when a caliper or its slides are not moving as they should. That wear pattern matters because simply replacing the thinnest pad would leave the cause in place. An inspection measures the set and checks the components that move it.
It only grinds on the first stop of the morning. Does that count?
Say exactly that when you call. Surface rust that forms overnight can make a brief noise on the first stop or two and then go, which is not the same as a noise on every stop. The pattern is part of the information.
The grinding stops when I release the brake. Does that narrow it down?
Yes. A sound tied directly to pedal application points the inspection toward braking components; a sound that continues while coasting may start somewhere else around the wheel. It narrows where to look, but it does not identify the part without an inspection.
The noise seems to come from one wheel. Is that useful to mention?
Yes. The corner, whether the sound changes while turning, and whether the vehicle pulls during the stop are useful details. Brake wear can differ from side to side, so the inspection still compares components across the axle rather than replacing a part from the sound alone.
